Barry was born in the Hutt Valley and received his education at Stokes Valley School, Taitā Intermediate, and Heretaunga College. He joined his father’s family funeral business in 1978. After qualifying as an embalmer and funeral director, he earned the New Zealand Certificate in Funeral Service. Barry then went on to pass his British exams and was admitted to the British Institute of Embalmers in 1985. He spent 23 years in the family business before it was sold.

After taking a break from funeral directing, Barry returned to the industry in 2014, as his passion for the profession had never waned. With over 30 years of experience as a funeral director, Barry values the interactions he has with client families and the support he can provide during their difficult times.

Barry and his wife, Lynn, have four children and three beautiful granddaughters, with whom they enjoy spending time. In his spare time, Barry loves cooking, gardening, traveling, and cherishing his beloved Buick Roadmaster.
